Unimagineable

As of this writing 67000 dead and climbing. I cannot even begin to comprehend that. Tens of thousands dead, more missing, entire cities gone. In moments. A random act of nature being nature. There is no one to blame, though some will try, there is no one to fight back against. No psychotic group, no fanatical sociopaths, no political enemies. It is not war. It is just nature being nature. It is horrifying. There is so little we can do to prevent this kind of thing. The best all our technology could do is to give perhaps a few minutes warning. We cannot stop this kind of thing. We cannot even predict them. They just are. And we are reminded just how fragile, transient and vulnerable we are.

The only thing that most of us can do is to try and help those who have survived in whatever way we can

You Know It’s Cold…

when your breath freezes in your mustache and beard. It’s an interesting sensation. As you exhale you get a little defrosting action and then an immediate refreeze. When it is as cold as it is today, below zero(that would be something like -13 to most of the world) it doesn’t defrost and if you spend anytime out there you get an ice build up. Tends to drip when you come inside.

The sun was shinning yesterday. That’s an unusual event in the winter here. Pretty much the only time it happens is when it is to damn cold for any moisture to be in the air. So no clouds. there is also about 8 inches of newly fallen snow on the ground. Which is unusually sparkley in the sun due to it be so freaking cold. I was walking along yesterday and wearing my sunglasses(to prevent snow blindness) and was stuck by the sparkling. It was very similar to what you see if you get hit in the head real hard. Only more even. I hate winter.

So this is Christmas. A white one here. Now my ideal Christmas day would be oh, someplace warm, lying in hammock on the beach listening to the wind on the waves…..

Oh well you deal with what you have. So Merry Christmas, Seasons greetings etc. Stay warm.

I Hate Winter

I mean I really hate winter. I don’t ski, snowmobile, ice fish or any other arctic pass time. I don’t find frozen slush, dead trees, gray skies or dirty piles of frozen white crap attractive. I do not enjoy sitting at my computer in my parka fun. Nor do I get any kick out of frozen toes and huddling by my electric heater. And the wind just plain sucks.

I hate winter.

Well now I feel better.

I have been very sparse on posting lately. I place most of the fault on a raging case of SAD and the holidays and well, I just got real busy with other things too.

My old theater group went the way of many theater groups last month. It folded. Money. Lack of money was the reason. But I was asked to be the technical Director for an up and coming classical theater group, who I have done lighting for in the past. This will be fun. As we just cast the next show and it doesn’t go into rehearsal for a month or so I took it on myself to redo their website, which they needed desperately. First thing I did was move to another server. the one they were on was a windows machine and they had done the old site in Front Page. What a mess. I wanted to set them up with some sort of easy CMS so anyone could update the sight without Front Page or knowledge of coding. I looked around for some simple systems but didn’t find any that really fit the bill. So I installed WordPress and crippled the hell out of it, took out all the commenting and trackback stuff etc.. And it works really well for a simple CMS.

When I started it I didn’t realize just how much stuff they had up there, since it wasn’t all that well organized. It is now but that’s where I have been the last few weeks.
