and his just vibrates at a different rythym then mostAs he approaches you know something is a little off about him. Perhaps it is just that he closes on you a tiny fraction quicker then most, a little closer then a stranger would. There is this little sense of uncomfortablness, a wariness rises in you. There is nothing about his appearance to raise any alarm. His clothes are casual but clean. He is well kept and and soft spoken. Maybe it is true that everyone has an aura and his just vibrates at a different rythym then most.

When he speaks his words come quickly, a little too quicky. It is as if he has started in mid conversation. It takes you a minute to understand what it is he is saying. He doesn’t seem to breath between sentences so you have no opportunity to respond and just let him finish.

He is asking for money.

At least once a week we cross paths and his story is always similar. He starts out somewhat apologetically, talking about not wanting to frighten you. Sometimes he says that his being black and I not and being approached by him might be worrisome. It seems his car has broken down and he is stuck here in a town he doesn’t know and he is trying to get money to fix it, get a cab or something along those lines. And do I have a few few dollars or even spare change.

I often will give some spare change to folks on the street who ask, if I have any. Not always. I think I did the first time he approached me. But none since then. I always wonder what turns his life took, what challenges he has had to face, what choices he made or were made for him that brought him to this place at this time. How far away is anyone from being there? It does help me to remember to be grateful for what I have. It really could be worse, a lot worse.

Everyday we learn that something we eat, or do, or whatever is now discovered to be bad for us. Any day now I expect to hear that saliva swallowed in small quantities for a long period of time leads to…some frightening horrible death. everyone who has died some frightening horrible death had swallowed saliva One could make a case for such. After all everyone who has died some frightening horrible death had swallowed saliva in small quantities for the vast majority of their lives. And often the studies I read seem to be based on nothing more then that. The people that suffered this fate all did this in common so it must be bad for everyone.

There always seems to be some unspoken assurance that if we don’t do, or eat, or whatever these things are we will live forever. Truth is if you eat right, exercise and all the other things one is supposed to do you still die. Somebody once said something along the lines of, “If you give up, whatever, you don’t live any longer, it just feels that way.”

When ever this comes up in conversation I usually say something along the lines of, “Hey, you remember when sunshine used to be a good thing?” Not this fiery globe of radiation that is instantly lethal to anyone stupid enough to go out in it without coating themselves in some kind of UV protective paint. Well it turns out maybe it ain’t so bad after all…

ABC News: Scientists Say Sunshine May Prevent Cancer
May 21, 2005
“Scientists are excited about a vitamin again. But unlike fads that sizzled and fizzled, the evidence this time is strong and keeps growing. If it bears out, it will challenge one of medicine’s most fundamental beliefs: that people need to coat themselves with sunscreen whenever they’re in the sun.

Doing that may actually contribute to far more cancer deaths than it prevents…”

Me? I gave up paying too much attention to these things long ago. I just choose to do most things in moderation and, you know, try to enjoy life. So far so good.

Clutter

Living, as I do, in a studio (read tiny) apartment and having previously lived in a large house which was suddenly lost(insert long sad tale of a broken heart, the downward spiral of my partners addiction and the destruction her illness caused, legal troubles, substance abuse treatment, multiple suicide attempts…) I ended up with more stuff then my place could hold comfortably. The results are a barely contained clutter. In a month or two I will be moving to a new larger place, which will solve that problem, mostly. But after having come across this I don’t feel so cluttered at all.

I am not an expert, well maybe I am, but that sure seems to be an interesting variation on one of the more intractable forms of OCD called hoarding.
